Reading Bulk Pack Prices Properly

2 minute read

A bulk pack looks cheaper because the number on the button is not a tiny supermarket tray. Sometimes it is cheaper. Sometimes it is just bigger. Reading the price properly means weight, cut, and whether the meat will leave the freezer as dinners. Bulk buy meat is useful when you do that sum. It is a trap when you buy a 6kg bag because the photograph is large.

Weight first

Fresh 5kg Chicken Breast Fillets is five kilos. Divide the price by five, then by the number of meals you will actually make. x20 Pork Steak Deal! is twenty steaks, not twenty kilos — count the steaks and the grams on the pack. 6kg Value Pack – Misshaped Diced Chicken Breast is six kilos of dice for curry, chilli, pie fillings. If you do not cook those meals, the per-kilo number is a fiction because some of it will be wasted, and wasted meat is the most expensive pack we sell.

Compare like with like. A 5kg of breast against a 1kg of breast. A twenty-pack of pork against a 4-pack of the same steak. Do not compare a steak box to a bag of legs and call the legs a worse deal because they are not steak. Shop bundles when the bundle lists contents you eat. Shop a single bulk bag when you only eat one cut.

The notepad test

Write the pack, the kilos, the price, the meals. If you cannot name the meals, you are not ready to click. That is how a butcher would stop you over-ordering at the counter, and it still works on a website. Bulk is a tool. It is not a personality. Used with a list, it is one of the few honest savings left in buying meat. Used as a trophy bag, it is just a heavy delivery.

Offers versus always-on bulk

Some packs are always bulk. Some are a short offer. An always-on 5kg of breast is a planning tool. A flashing deal on a cut you never cook is a distraction. If the offer is on a cut you already eat, it is a gift. If it is not, it is a different conversation. We would rather you bought the boring bulk bag you will finish than the exciting box you will photograph and ignore.

Keep a running note of packs you did not finish. If a bulk bag appears on that list twice, you are not a bulk customer for that cut. Switch to the smaller pack and the per-kilo number can be a little worse while the true cost gets better, because you stopped throwing meat away.
