How to Cook Beef Meatballs

0 comments  •   2 minute read

Meatballs are small, so they overcook in the time it takes to make a cup of tea if you blast them. They also stay pink in the middle if you simmer them from fridge-cold in a cold sauce. Brown or bake first, then sauce. Beef Meatballs 12x 25g is 12 × 25g in the title you will see on the site as packed. Meatball Twin Pack is the bigger shop. Both live in meatballs.

Oven and air fryer

Oven: 200°C for 12 to 15 minutes, turning once, until 75°C. Air fryer: 190°C for 8 to 10 minutes, shaking once. Then they can sit in a tomato sauce for 10 minutes to take on flavour without falling apart. Baking first keeps them round; stirring raw balls in a sauce from the start turns them to mince rubble. Lean Beef Mince 400g is the pack if you want to roll your own; the ready balls are the week-night version. Shop lean beef mince when you are making both a Bolognese and a tray of balls from the same order.

Pan and simmer

Pan: medium heat, 8 to 10 minutes, rolling them so they brown on several sides, then add sauce and simmer 8 minutes. Do not stab them to check; use a probe or cut one. BBQ meatballs on a tray on the grill are a party snack, 10 to 12 minutes, but they want a sauce or they eat dry. Ready to cook meat is the wider flavoured shelf; meatballs are the beef one that children will actually eat.

Portions, pasta and leftovers

A 25g ball is a mouthful; budget six to eight per adult with spaghetti, more if they are the only protein. The twin pack is two dinners or a party tray. Leftovers in sauce freeze well; leftovers dry do not. Reheat in the sauce to 75°C. Do not microwave a pile of dry balls and wonder why they bounce. Shop beef mince if you would rather a sauce without the rolling. Meatballs are a shape, not a different meat — the cook is still “minced beef, cooked through, not dried out”.

Ready meatballs exist so you are not rolling mince at 6pm. If you enjoy the rolling, buy the 400g mince and do it on a Sunday. Either way, minced beef is cooked through, not pink in the middle like a rump. That is the food-safety line, and it is not optional because they are small.

Bake or brown, then sauce, 75°C. That is a 25g beef meatball, and it is a faster mince dinner than a 90-minute Bolognese.
