How to Cook Chicken Legs

0 comments  •   2 minute read

A chicken leg is a thigh and a drumstick still joined. You get skin, two bones, and a joint that hides pink if you only look at the drum. Probe the thigh side. Chicken Legs 900g-1.1kg (Frozen) is a frozen 900g–1.1kg pack. Budget Saver Chicken Legs (2kg Pack) is the 2kg value pack. Both live in chicken legs and British chicken.

Oven and air fryer

Defrost in the fridge. Oven: 200°C for 40 to 45 minutes, skin up, turning once, until 75°C in the thigh, not touching bone. Air fryer: 190°C for 25 to 28 minutes, turning once. From frozen, add 10 minutes and still probe. Salt and oil on plain legs; they have enough fat to crisp if you give them space. A 900g pack is three to four legs depending on size, a family tray with potatoes. The 2kg pack is two trays or a freezer split. Rest 5 minutes.

BBQ and traybakes

BBQ indirect 30 minutes, then 8 to 10 minutes over a hotter zone to crisp. Chicken Thighs 900g-1.1kg (Frozen) and drums from the same frozen chicken shelf cook to similar times if you want a mixed bird tray. Shop traybake meat and frozen chicken when the order is a week of bone-in chicken rather than a single pack of legs. Lemon and garlic on the tray in the last 15 minutes; at the start they burn.

Carving, leftovers, mistakes

Serve whole, or cut through the joint into a thigh and a drum on the board. Leftover leg meat is the best stock-and-sandwich chicken you will pick; it stays moister than breast. Do not crowd ten legs on one small tray. Do not trust golden skin without a probe at the joint — that is where legs lie. A 2kg pack looks like a lot of bone; it is also a lot of dinner. Cook half, freeze half, labelled. Legs are the cut that makes a roast-chicken dinner without needing a whole bird you then struggle to carve.

A 900g pack is a week night. A 2kg pack is two week nights or a small gathering. Split the 2kg when it arrives if your drawer will not take it in one cook; freeze half. Legs are cheap because of the bone, not because the meat is poor. The bone is why they still taste of chicken after 45 minutes in the oven.

Space, 75°C in the thigh, rest. That is a chicken leg, frozen pack or 2kg budget box, and it is the bone-in supper that still feels like a proper chicken dinner.
