Best Meat Boxes in the UK

A good meat box should save you money, save you a trip to the shops and fill your week with meals you actually want to cook. A bad one leaves you with cuts you don't know what to do with and a freezer that won't shut. As butchers who pack boxes every day, here is what we think a meat box should contain, how to judge whether it's good value, and which of our boxes suits which household.

What a good meat box should contain

  1. Cuts you cook every week. Chicken breast, mince, sausages, bacon and steaks are the backbone of most British kitchens. A good box leans on these rather than padding with oddities.
  2. A mix of quick and slow. Something for a Tuesday (steaks, chops, chicken) and something for a Sunday (a joint or a casserole cut).
  3. Clear weights. You should know exactly what's inside, in grams or pack counts, so you can compare the price with buying loose.
  4. Freezer-friendly packing. Meat portioned into sensible packs so you can freeze and defrost one meal at a time.
  5. Honest labelling. Whether items are fresh, frozen or previously frozen should be stated.

How to judge meat box value

The simplest test: add up what the same items would cost bought separately, from the same shop. A good box should come in below that, either as a lower price or with something added free. Then check the price per kg against what you normally pay. And be honest about whether you'll use everything, because a cheap box is expensive if half of it gets thrown away.

If you're torn, our guide meat box or loose cuts: how to decide works through it.

BBQ meat boxes

A BBQ meat box should give you variety on the grill without leftovers you can't use. Look for burgers, sausages, chicken and something like ribs or belly slices. Our guide to how many a BBQ party pack feeds helps you size it.

What about organic meat boxes?

Organic meat boxes come from farms certified to organic standards, and they cost more as a result. We don't sell certified organic meat, so we don't describe our boxes that way. What we offer is butcher-prepared meat, clear weights and value boxes. If organic certification matters to you, check for a recognised certification body's logo on any box you buy.

Freezer space: how much room does a meat box need?

Check the total weight on the box page and compare it with the space you have. Before you order, clear a drawer or two, and freeze mince and diced meat flat in bags so they stack. Our freezer-fill boxes guide has more tips.

Delivery

Our boxes are packed at our butchery in Cornwall and sent in a cold box. Weekday UK delivery is free over £85 (£6.95 under), and there's no minimum order. Some items are sent frozen and arrive at least partially defrosted; each product page says so. Put everything in the fridge or freezer as soon as it arrives.

Meat box tips

  • Plan three or four meals from the box before you order, so nothing goes to waste.
  • Freeze on day one anything you won't cook within a couple of days.
  • Label and date everything.
  • Thaw in the fridge, never on the worktop.
  • Compare like for like: price per kg, fresh vs frozen, and pack sizes.

For first orders, essentials hampers for a first order and budget boxes compared with steak boxes are good starting points. See every box on bulk buy meat boxes.

Meat box FAQs

What should be in a good meat box?

Cuts you cook every week, such as chicken, mince, sausages, bacon and steaks, with clear weights, freezer-friendly packs and honest labelling of fresh or frozen items.

Are meat boxes good value?

They can be. Compare the box price with buying the same items separately, and check the price per kg. The saving only counts if you use everything.

How long does meat from a meat box last?

Fresh meat should be cooked by its use-by date or frozen straight away. Most cuts keep well in the freezer for several months.

Do you sell organic meat boxes?

No. We don't sell certified organic meat, so we don't label our boxes as organic.

How is a meat box delivered?

Ours are packed in Cornwall and sent in a cold box. Weekday delivery is free over £85, or £6.95 under, with no minimum order.

What is a meat box?

A bundle of different cuts sold together, usually cheaper per kg than buying each item separately.

Are meat boxes worth it?

They are good value if you will use or freeze everything in the box; check the weights, the cut mix and the delivery cost.
