Which Chicken Piece to Buy This Week

0 comments  •   2 minute read

Breast gets the meal-prep headlines. The rest of the bird is what a butcher would tell a family to cook more often. Thighs, drumsticks and legs are cheaper, harder to dry out, and they take a tray or an air fryer without a speech. Thighs, drumsticks and legs is the collection to open when the week is busy and you want chicken that still tastes like chicken. The piece you buy should match the meal, not a habit of clicking breast because it is familiar.

Thighs, drums, legs

Chicken Thighs 900g-1.1kg (Frozen) is the flavour pack: more fat, more forgiveness, traybakes and air fryers. Chicken Drumsticks 900g-1.1kg (Frozen) is the hands-on pack — kids, a movie night, a buffet where nobody wants a knife. Chicken Legs 900g-1.1kg (Frozen) is thigh and drum still joined, which is the Sunday-tray option: fewer pieces to turn, more meat per piece. All three arrive frozen in these sizes, so the week starts with a defrost, not with a fantasy of instant supper unless you planned it.

If you want bone-in chicken four times this week, the 2kg thigh value pack or the 2kg budget legs pack is the better shop than four small bags. If you want it once, the 900g–1.1kg pack is enough. Shop chicken legs when you are roasting. Shop drums when you are eating with fingers. Shop thighs when you want the meat that still tastes good cold the next day.

A week without defaulting to breast

Monday thighs on a tray with onions. Wednesday drums in the air fryer. Saturday legs in the oven with a proper rest. That is a chicken week that does not feel like a diet. Keep a breast pack if you must have a lean lunch. Do not let breast bully the rest of the bird out of the basket. The piece you buy this week is the piece you will actually season and cook, not the piece a fitness account told you was moral.

Defrost and seasoning

Move the pack to the fridge the night before. Pat the skin dry so it can crisp. Salt, pepper, a little oil; paprika if you want colour. Bone-in chicken is done at 75°C near the bone. Rest 5 minutes. That small routine is why thighs and legs beat a dry breast on a busy week, and why we keep packing them in family sizes instead of treating them as an afterthought to fillet.
