What does a leg of lamb cost, and how does it compare per kg with shanks or chops? Lamb prices vary between shops and through the year, so rather than quote averages we can't verify, this guide uses the live prices on our own counter. You'll find the leg of lamb price, the price per kg of each cut, how many people each feeds, and a rough cost per person, so you can plan a roast or a midweek dinner.

Prices are our live prices at the time of publishing (30 September 2026). Product pages always show the current price. Price per kg is worked out from the pack weight range, so it's a range.

Leg of lamb price
Our Whole Carvery Leg of Lamb 2.2-2.7kg costs £34.99 for a 2.2–2.7kg bone-in carvery leg, which works out at about £12.96–£15.90 per kg. It feeds 6–8 people, which is roughly £4.40–£5.80 a head, often with leftovers. Remember that a bone-in leg includes the weight of the bone, so you get less meat per kg than a boneless joint, but the bone adds flavour and makes for easy carving. Price of lamb shanks
The Lamb Shanks Double Pack (£12.99) contains two shanks weighing 600–800g in total, about £16.24–£21.65 per kg. One shank per person is a generous portion, so it's around £6.50 a head. Shanks are a slow-cooking cut: braised for 2½–3 hours they fall off the bone. See how to cook lamb shanks.
Price of lamb chops
The Barnsley Lamb Chops 450-600g (£10.99) weigh 450–600g, about £18.32–£24.42 per kg. A Barnsley chop is a thick double loin chop, so one each is a proper dinner, around £5.50 a head. See what is a Barnsley chop.
Hogget shoulder chunks
The 1kg Hogget Lamb Bone-in Shoulder Chunks (£13.99) are 1kg of bone-in shoulder pieces from hogget (lamb that's a little older and fuller-flavoured), about £13.99 per kg. They make a curry or stew for 4, about £3.50 a head before other ingredients. See what is hogget.
Why do lamb prices vary?
- The cut: tender, quick-cooking cuts (chops, loin, rack) cost more per kg than hard-working cuts (shoulder, shank, neck).
- Bone-in or boneless: bone-in is cheaper per kg, but part of the weight is bone.
- The season: new-season lamb, and demand around Easter, can affect prices.
- Age: hogget and mutton are often better value than young lamb for slow cooking.
- Fresh or frozen: some of our lamb is sent frozen and arrives at least partially defrosted; product pages say which.
Cost per person: how to compare
Price per kg is useful, but cost per person is what matters for a meal. Allow roughly:
- Bone-in leg: 300–350g raw per person
- Boneless joint: 200–250g raw per person
- Shanks: one per person
- Barnsley chops: one per person
- Diced or chunks for stew: 200–250g per person (bone-in chunks a little more)
How to get the best value from lamb
- Roast a leg for a crowd, then use the leftovers for shepherd's pie, curry or sandwiches.
- Choose shoulder or hogget chunks for stews and curries.
- Save chops for quick dinners, where their speed is worth paying for.
- Buy ahead and freeze. Lamb freezes well; thaw it in the fridge.
- Make stock from the leg bone after the roast.
A week of lamb on a budget
Here's how one order can stretch across a week:
- Sunday: roast the leg of lamb for the family, with roast potatoes and mint sauce.
- Monday: cold lamb sandwiches or a lamb salad with the leftovers.
- Wednesday: shepherd's pie from the last of the roast, minced or finely chopped.
- Saturday: slow-cooked hogget curry from the shoulder chunks, made the day before.
That's four meals from two packs, with the leg bone left over for stock.

Lamb prices FAQs
How much is a leg of lamb?
Our bone-in carvery leg of lamb (2.2–2.7kg) is £34.99 at the time of publishing, about £12.96–£15.90 per kg. It feeds 6–8.
How much leg of lamb do I need per person?
About 300–350g of bone-in leg per person, or 200–250g if the joint is boneless.
Why are lamb chops more expensive per kg than a leg?
Chops come from the tender loin, which is a small part of the animal and quick to cook. A leg is a larger, bone-in joint, so it's cheaper per kg.
What is the cheapest cut of lamb?
Shoulder, neck and breast are usually the best value per kg. On our counter at the moment, the bone-in leg and the hogget shoulder chunks are the lowest price per kg.
Is hogget cheaper than lamb?
Often, yes, and it has a fuller flavour that suits slow cooking. Prices vary, so check the current price per kg.
