Protein per Pound: Which Cuts Go Further

0 comments  •   2 minute read

Protein per pound is a cold way to shop, and it is still useful when the month is tight. You are not buying a laboratory. You are buying meat that happens to carry a lot of protein, at a price that does not insult you. At Meatsupermarket.com the cuts that win that sum are chicken breast in bulk, lean mince, and chicken legs. Steak wins a different sum: you wanted steak. Keep those two ideas apart and the basket stays honest.

The efficient proteins

5kg Frozen Chicken Breast Fillets is the blunt instrument: a lot of lean meat, a lot of portions, a freezer job. Lean Beef Mince 400g is the other weekday win — sauces, pies, stuffed vegetables, a high protein count without a restaurant price. Chicken legs in a 2kg saver pack are cheaper still if you are willing to eat on the bone. Shop lean chicken and chicken before you wander into fillet steak and then wonder why the “protein shop” cost the same as a birthday.

Trim and bone change the number. A bone-in leg is less meat per kilo than a boneless fillet, but the kilo is cheaper, and the supper is still protein. If you only count edible cooked meat, breast still tends to win. If you count how many plates leave the table happy per pound spent, legs and mince often catch up. That is why we pack both instead of lecturing you toward one macro spreadsheet.

When steak still belongs

A rump 8x pack or a family sirloin bundle is not the cheapest protein you can click. It is the protein you will eat because you like it. If that is what keeps you cooking at home, it is still cheaper than a pub. Buy steak as steak. Buy breast and mince as the volume. Mix them in one order from bulk buy meat if you want a week that is not all beige.

A simple comparison for the basket

Write three lines: protein nights, steak nights, leftover nights. Put bulk chicken or mince on the first, a steak pack on the second, legs or thighs on the third. That is protein per pound with a butcher’s manners. Anyone who tells you fillet is a budget protein is selling a different religion.

Cooked yield versus pack weight

Mince loses less drama in the pan than a fatty steak, but it still sheds water if you brown it properly. Breast shrinks a little. Legs look smaller once the bone is left on the plate. If you track food, weigh cooked when you can, and do not panic at the pack weight. The point of the sum is to stop you buying fillet for everyday protein, not to turn supper into a laboratory notebook.
