Ingredients
- 800g lean beef mince (2 × 400g packs)
- 1 onion, 2 carrots, 1 celery stick, diced; 2 garlic cloves
- 1 tbsp tomato purée; 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce; 400ml beef stock
- 1kg potatoes; 40g butter; splash of milk; salt and pepper
- Optional: handful of frozen peas; grated Cheddar on top
Method
- Boil potatoes until tender; mash with butter and milk. Season.
- Brown the mince in a large pan; tip off excess fat. Soften onion, carrot and celery; add garlic and tomato purée.
- Return mince, add Worcestershire and stock. Simmer 20–25 minutes until rich. Stir in peas if using.
- Spoon mince into a baking dish, top with mash (and cheese if using). Bake at 200°C fan for 25–30 minutes until golden.
- Rest 5 minutes and serve cottage pie with lean beef mince — proper British comfort.
