Quick answer: A 6oz steak weighs about 170g, an 8oz about 227g, a 10oz about 283g and a 16oz (1lb) about 454g. A 6–8oz steak is a typical single portion. A 16oz steak is a big appetite or one to share, and thicker steaks need longer cooking and a longer rest.

How long to cook each size
Time depends on thickness more than weight. As a guide for medium-rare in a very hot pan, turning every minute: a 2cm steak (typical 6oz) takes 4–5 minutes in total, a 3cm steak (typical 8oz) 6–7 minutes, and a 4cm+ steak (16oz) is best seared and finished in a 200°C oven to a core of 52–54°C. Check with a thermometer and the steak doneness chart.
How much steak per person?
6–8oz per adult with sides is plenty; 10oz+ for big appetites. For a crowd, a few 16oz steaks sliced on a board go further than individual steaks.
Which cut comes in which size?
Sirloin, rump, ribeye and fillet are commonly sold as 6oz and 8oz; big steaks such as T-bone and tomahawk are sold by weight, often 500g–1.2kg. See types of steak.
