Ingredients
- 500g braising steaks (about 5x 100g)
- 2 onions, sliced; 2 carrots, chunked; 2 garlic cloves
- 2 tbsp oil; 2 tbsp plain flour; 400ml beef stock; 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp mustard; thyme; salt and pepper
- 1kg potatoes; 50g butter; splash of milk for mash
Method
- Season and flour the steaks. Brown in oil in a casserole; set aside. Soften onion, carrot and garlic.
- Stir in remaining flour, then stock, Worcestershire, mustard and thyme. Return steaks.
- Cover and simmer gently 1½–2 hours (or oven 160°C fan) until the meat is tender and gravy is rich.
- Meanwhile boil potatoes; mash with butter and milk; season well.
- Serve braising steak casserole with mash and gravy spooned over — proper British comfort.
